A while back there was a ridculous amouont of buzz around "The Secret" so I borrowed it from a friend to see what all the hub-bub was about. From what I read, I drew similar to conclusions to yours--that the idea that we are entitled to good things without any hard work is the perfect ideaology for fat, lazy Americans. Also, as a writer and editor, the book seemed skewed towards a female audience with lots of overtones of rebounding from bad relationships.

Of course I'm also a cynical jerk with some of these things so I will say you don't need to be a magician to realize positive thinking-- and putting that thinking into action--makes positive things sometimes happen. Sure, if you're born into a wealthy family or priviledged position, the likelihood that random great things will befall you increases. And fat thoughts or no, if you're at the bottum rung of society, all the wishful thinking in the world isn't going to help you unless you overcome a lot of "non-faith" based things.

In the end, the philosophy that "I want good things to happen to me because I deserve it" is kind of sketchy, especially when validated by material possesions. And as I'm sure you know, when life throws some real wrenches into your gears, positive thoughts are part of the equation but there's lots of other factors at play. As much as I wanted a good job for example, no one just randomly offered me one-- I had to apply, seek, interview, etc.

Also, the Magic of Dialogue looks really boring.
