Context behind the cut.
The quote comes from Part 8 of DeceasedCrab’s Let’s Play Civilization. If you’ve never played the Civilization series before, it’s basically what you might expect–it’s a turn-based strategy game where you control a civilization and attempt to build it up. Generally, there are two ways to win–be the first Civilization into space, or destroy all the other civilizations. Democracy is one of the forms of government in the game. It confers a lot of bonuses on your civilization if you can set it up correctly, but actually doing so within the game parameters is very difficult (It’s also nigh impossible to declare war in a Democracy, which means it’s basically right out as a viable government for me). Suffice to say that DC’s civilization was decidedly not set up to take advantage of a democracy, and he ultimately just started the game over when pretty much the entire civilization revolted on him.

Democracy works well if you’re trying to be the best tech-based society, IE get into space. If you’re trying to win by brute force, fundamentalism always worked for me (especially the zealots populous, heh)
Much like actual world affairs, even a militarily strong Democracy is going to be like a giant fighting with one hand tied behind its back. I have a strong sense George Bush wouldn’t be very good at any of the Civilization games either.

Yeah, the Let’s Play started off trying to take over the world, and for some reason just up and abandoned that strategy when it shifted to democracy, leaving to massive civil disorder. Funny stuff, really.
And what’re you talking about? GWB would be great at the Civ games (As we all know he’d just pick despotism or dictatorship or whatever the equivalent option is in later games)! Just don’t ask him to win via tech. For that matter, don’t ask me to win via tech either.
Ha, good point! Have you played Civ IV? There’s 6 or 7 different ways to win the game, from World Domination to… umm… other stuff. I’ve only tried the space race and actually failed on account of using Civ II strategies.
