If I'm not mistaken, he's a Juliard (sp?) drop out-- which is saying something. That being said, knowing how to play doesn't by default make your music good (how many people are actually dedicated Steve Vai fans, as opposed to a "non-expert" like Kurt Cobain?) It's also one of the reasons I'm not as big of Dream Theater fan as you-- they have the right ideas but their greatness gets in the way, so to speak. Still, no matter what-- they are still making a living playing music which is more than I can say!
