I’m a Rock Band Wizard…Or Something

Yep. Mainly due to this:

Basically, it’s a 100% of The Who’s “Pinball Wizard” in Rock Band 2 on Expert Vocals. It’s not a particularly long song, but it has some of the more notoriously difficult phrases in the game in the “Sure plays a mean pinball”s. I never had any major trouble with those specific phrases, oddly (Being more vexed by the “That deaf, dumb and blind kid”s myself), but this was the first time I 100%ed it in a solo game (I did it once before while playing with Jess on guitar, surprising even myself at the time).

This is the first full combo that tells me that I may be pretty okay at this whole “Rock Band 2 vocals” thing, despite what my scoresheet would tell you.

Woo!

Congrats! I have to say, the way the vocals work in Rock Band baffle me (obviously). On videos I’ve seen, people are rarely “singing” as one might expect but kind of “softly intoning” — yes? And of all the songs, “Pinball Wizard” has never seemed difficult from my ear’s perspective — I mean in terms of real life singalong, not Rock Band.

My whole point is: I can’t sing.

I agree with your accurate assessment of your singing ability. ;)

I don’t know that I’d so as far as you, though it’s true that Rock Band 1, at least, requires you to be sort of “robotic” in your singing on Expert in order to score well. This loosened this up a bit in Rock Band 2, where Expert is actually closer to (Though still a bit more difficult than) Rock Band 1’s Hard. That said, it’s true that it’s difficult to insert any sort of “character” into your voice and expect to score well (Example: Think of that sort of growl-singing James Hetfield does, or something like your typical Disturbed song–trying to replicate it exactly throws the game’s pitch detection off, which results in poor scores). Guitar Hero: World Tour is actually even worse about this–suffice to say that getting above a 90% or so is all but impossible because of how it judges you.

As for Pinball Wizard itself, until today (After I 100%ed it twice before…weird), I had my trouble spots on it, but it was never “Sure plays a mean pinball”. Oh well.

Congrats! No matter if it’s easier on one game than the other, I’ve got mad respect for singers because just like James, I can’t sing! (And I don’t gave the guts to get better at it too hehe)
