Return to Musical Doodlings of a College Kid

Time Marches On

Download “Time Marches On”

The music to this song came about as I was playing around on my at-the-time (Early January 2004 maybe) new Christmas present, an Ovation acoustic guitar. As a result of this new present, I went through a brief acoustic phase during which I wrote this song. I honestly don’t remember the motivation behind the lyrics, though I’ll admit they’re semi-autobiographical at the very least. Of the originals on the Musical Doodlings… page, this is probably the best. It’s probably telling in a number of ways that I say that–about the only way this song fits in with most of my natural tendencies is that it’s fairly long, clocking in near the 5-minute mark. Other than that, it’s not on my primary instrument (I’m a bassist first, everything else second), it doesn’t have any real unnecessary instrumental breaks, and amazingly, it’s in straight 4/4 time throughout the whole thing. As a certain Dragon Ball Z villain might say, “WHAT!? There’s no way that can be right!” Yet it is, and I love the result even today.

Lyrics

I see your eyes
And in them fear
Of the force of time
Both far and near
I see your face
Stare out beyond me
Out into space
Awed at what may be

The clock goes on
Soon all fall prey
To its haltless march
Night turns to day
It’s only here
That you feel safe
In this present hour
In this present place

And you run from the future
While despising your past
And you cower in this day
While awaiting your last

It’s all so clear
You hate the unknown
And the myriad risks
To which it’s prone
And the many directions
Which you may lead
From the highest skies
To the deepest seas

The past reminds
Of folly of old
The future brings
Death’s coming cold
It’s only here
That you feel safe
In this familiar hour
This familiar place

And you run from the future
While despising your past
And you cower in this day
While awaiting your last

While awaiting your last
While awaiting your last…
