Story

To be honest, I don’t remember a whole lot about writing this song, being as most of it came to me several years ago. I do know that I wrote it during that “Shiny new toy!” phase of first having my acoustic guitar, and I also know that lyrically, the song is essentially my vision of what a baby goes through when it first leaves its mother’s womb (As though I’d remember back that far…).
Other notes:

  • I’m really not a very good acoustic guitar player yet, as you can tell by just listening to this song. The progressions aren’t even that difficult, and I still can’t do it right, at least for now.
  • In contrast to the guitar playing, I actually impressed myself with how easily the higher notes came to me on this vocally. I’m almost progressing as a singer!
  • For that matter, I use a very different voice through the entire song. It’s my normal singing range, but with an accent of sorts that just sort of came to me subconsciously.
  • Thrill to the incredibly thin and treble-y guitar tone, which I think is mostly a product of going directly into my computer recording-wise.
  • I enjoy utterly obliterating the syntax of the English language for the sake of getting stuff to rhyme, evidently. Take that, Honors Convocation Award I received for having the highest average in English 12 Honors!

Lyrics

You’ve opened your eyes, tell us
What do you see?
You’ve opened your ears, tell us
What do you hear?
You’ve opened your mind, tell us
What do you know?
Now that you’re free, tell us
Where will you go?

The world surrounds you,
You long to explore
You grow tired of this room,
You cry out for more
Encased in your covers
Your wanderlust consumes
You panic as strangers
All fawn over you

Trapped in a frail body
Blessed with a heart of pearl
Your new life makes your tired
Of this fact you are sure
A paragon of beauty
Your moral state unused
Watch out for those who would have
Your purity abused

You’ve opened your eyes, tell us
What do you see?
You’ve opened your ears, tell us
What do you hear?
You’ve opened your mind, tell us
What do you know?
Now that you’re free, tell us
Where will you go?

Released to the world
Your mind tries to start
Your arms simply flail
As on beats your heart
Your legs cannot carry you
Out of your mess
You try to announce to all
Your body’s distress

Your bad situation
Prepares you for life
The beautiful, the ugly
The pleasures and strife
This Earth has its wonders
As you will find out
For now, young one, rest well
And ride this roundabout

Trapped in a frail body
Blessed with a heart of pearl
Your new life makes your tired
Of this fact you are sure
A paragon of beauty
Your moral state unused
Watch out for those who would have
Your purity abused

You’ve opened your eyes, tell us
What do you see?
You’ve opened your ears, tell us
What do you hear?
You’ve opened your mind, tell us
What do you know?
Now that you’re free, tell us
Where will you go?
